It’s Thanksgiving Eve!

November 26, 2008 · Leave a Comment

And, the “Crew” will be busy as usual!  Robin “Bo’Ski” will be manning the grill preparing a mouth watering breakfast.  Drew “the Grill Man” will be creating a soup of the day and fixing those mouth watering lunches.  Shawnee “Stella” will be making a crowd favorite, Stella’s Sweet Tea, along with taking your orders and smiling!  Then they all get to go home and start preparing for their Thanksgiving feast with their family and friends.

But, before we leave you for our holiday weekend we’d like to express our sincere thanks for your continued support throughout the year.  CAROS wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for the wonderful customers who visit us each day.  May you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving Day with your family and friends.

We’ll see ya all on Monday and we promise that leftover turkey will not be on the menu!!!

Wow, hope you all enjoyed the “bird!”

November 21, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Our Pre Thanksgiving Day meal was a hit!!! There appears to be more turkey lovers out there than we ever thought!!! Thank you so much for making our hard work to prepare a full turkey dinner, in our cramped quarters, a huge success. :)

Heck, we were still cleaning up and the discussion went to the Pre Christmas Day special! Lol Geez, the least we could have done was to relax, catch our breath and take a day to reorganize. Nope, not the “Crew!” Their brans were working overtime trying to decided whether the “meat” of the day should be a pork roast, a beef roast or another turkey day! Maybe we should just have “Ho Ho Burgers” because we are essentially a burger joint. Who knows, but stay tuned to find out what the heck we decide on.

Hope you all enjoyed the puzzle yesterday. Here’s another one to tempt your brain. Have to admit that this one is personal. It’s a picture of the “Grill Man” Drew’s “tribe!” Enjoy solving it and then put a big smile on your face as you look into the eyes of these critters that are/were well loved at Karin and Drew’s farm.

PRE TURKEY DAY AT CAROS!

November 19, 2008 · Leave a Comment

That’s right, we’re celebrating Thanksgiving a week early. Hey, we figured that a person just can’t get enough turkey and trimmings during the holiday season so we’re starting you off with our Pre Thanksgiving day at CAROS!

Tomorrow, Thursday, is “the” day! You can call ahead or just stop by and enjoy a good old fashioned meal including turkey, mashed taters and gravy, cornbread dressing, green beans, cranberry sauce and a roll to make sure you get a clean plate for only $8! The “crew” is busy creating the perfect “Joint” Thanksgiving! Heck, you might even get a surprise dessert!

For those of you who save your “turkey day” belly for the turkey, we’ll still have our usual fare available. We know some folks just can’t survive without a “Boozer” or a “Ham’mer” so we’ll keep the grills going in addition to our turkey feast! :)

Have to admit that we thought about going all the way with the “turkey” thing and adding a special turkey’n egg biscuit for breakfast but we figured that didn’t sound very appetizing! Lol So, you’ll have to settle for our usual great breakfast menu. Hey, turkey’s lay eggs and we have eggs anyway you want them so I guess we’re still keeping the “turkey day” thing going! Sorry, just couldn’t resist that.

Give us a call at 255-0039 and reserve your Pre Thanksgiving meal. And, don’t forget…you can get it to go so you can head back to the office and get your work done before the holiday week starts!

Happy Pre Thanksgiving to all!

Meet The “Crewettes!”

November 14, 2008 · 1 Comment

Well, now that you’ve met the “Crew” how about a quick peek at the “Crewettes!” They’re the ones that you only see occasionally, in other words they are the spouses! But believe me they still do their part in make sure CAROS is always a fun place to eat.

William is Robin’s hubby and you might have seen him behind the cash register on a Saturday. And, he’s been known to handle a mean mop on occasion! In his real life he installs and repairs appliances for a local Lexington company. Aside from Robin his greatest love are the three four-legged guys and gals that share their home…Lucy, LeRoy and Frankie! Oh, can’t forget about his newest love…a motorcycle! He said he spent 18 years wanting one and he finally bit the bullet and bought one this year. Wish you all could have seen him the first time he rode up to CAROS! He was like a kid in a candy store. We all got a good laugh out of watching him go out quite frequently to check on his new “baby!” You won’t see him working at CAROS much anymore because his “baby” needs attention, but he does stop by daily for a good home cooked meal!

William takes his cashier job very seriously!!!!caros-william

Karin is Drew’s wife and up until he joined CAROS, was his 24/7 soul mate. It’s amazing that they still like each other after 10 years of constant togetherness while running their business! Lol Karin stays home on the farm to run Herb’n Renewal but you can find her each Saturday at CAROS taking orders, making sandwiches and dishing out chili and soups. “Mrs. Drew” as most customers know her by is also responsible for this blog and the daily updates. She manages to keep CAROS in menus, signs and any other printing needs. She’s also the one responsible for the goofy decorated stools and the odd border of utensils that hang on our wall. Her brain never stops and her creativity is sometimes scary! Lol

She’s also good for a customer hug!!!caros-karin-buck

CAROS just wouldn’t be the same without the support that our “Crewettes” give us. :)

Now for the BIG NEWS!!!!

ROBIN IS THE BIG 40 TODAY!!!!!

bday

Come on in and enjoy some

homebaked Happy Birthday Cake!!!

And, after the Birthday celebration is over, don’t forget that tomorrow is Saturday and that means HERB’N RENEWAL will be set up inside CAROS! That holiday season is fast approaching and you’ve only got 2 more Saturday’s to shop for stocking stuffers for the food lovers on your list!  You’ll also be able to find an assortment of gift baskets! Get To Know The “Crew” Day 3!

November 13, 2008 · 1 Comment

Well the next member of the “crew” is the big bald guy whose back is normally the only thing customers get to see! Drew, “the Grill Man” is usually cooking up a storm on the grill when most of you come into CAROS.

The “Grill Man” started in the restaurant business at the tender age of 5. No, he wasn’t cooking then but he did have the duty of helping his grandpa wash the dishes, make the donuts and anything else that his beloved grandpa needed help with! Drew’s family owned the Starlite Drive-In on Nicholasville Rd. I’ll bet some of you remember eating there many years ago. Unfortunately Drew’s mom and dad divorced and he was uprooted and headed towards Florida for a short time. From there his family moved to Gatlinburg, Tennessee and his mom opened a KFC! Nope, no fried chicken smell for him so he chose something a bit sweeter by going to work in a candy store where he made fudge, pulled taffy and dipped candy apples. You might have even seen him in one of those Gatlinburg windows while he worked his magic pulling taffy!

After high school he returned to Lexington and went back to work with his dad at Starlite but that chicken smell followed him all of the time and he said no more and this time he meant it! He headed back to Tennessee where me managed a local pub. But he missed the food part! So, off to New Orleans where he got his love of Creole and Cajun foods. From there the ocean sounded good so he headed to Florida and his other love…seafood! Like any person who loves to create, boredom soon took over and he headed back to the Bluegrass to work at such local favorites as Columbia’s and Hemmingways.

Well, heck…here comes that boredom or was it growing up? Drew became the Food Service Director at Pine Meadow where he met Robin. That friendship has lasted to this day. But the position didn’t! Lol There must be something about “food” people…they just like changes! But this time the change was a great thing, he finally met Karin and made her his fourth…YIKES, fourth wife!!! Still can’t figure out where he found the time to marry three other women!

But, life with Karin calmed the restlessness in him down a bunch! They both loved food and gardening so it was a perfect match when they decided to open their own business, Herb’n Renewal. What started out as an herb plant business soon became an herb seasoning business. He and Karin sold their herb blends at the Lexington Farmers’ Market for 10 years when Robin came back into their lives and as they say, the rest is history…or is it current event? Lol It doesn’t matter because Drew, the “Grill Man” is now Robin’s partner in CAROS and the two of them are smiling again!

Drew and his wife of 14 years, Karin, live in Garrard County where they still continue to run Herb’n Renewal. Yup, that wonderful food, including those “crack fries” get seasoned with Herb’n Renewal blends! The two of them are privileged to be allowed to live in the same home as their 4 cats and their big old girl Addie. Don’t forget the possums and raccoons that rely on Drew bringing home leftovers from CAROS!

They say life goes in circles and Drew’s certainly is a perfect example. He and his friend Robin are now cooking, grilling and dipping up chili side by side at CAROS!

The “Grill Man” even cooks at home! My word, he uses some big kitchen gadgets! EEK!!!

And, he can sure help with the CAROS new look! :) caros-drew-hanging

Meet The “Crew” part 2!

November 12, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Wow, where do we start with Robin, aka “Bo’Ski” and her trip to CAROS! Let’s just say that she started out “shucking” oysters at 14 but don’t tell anyone because she fibbed about her age! From there she moved up to fried chicken at the KFC on Nicholasville Rd. This started her friendship with Drew, “the Grill Man” because his family owned the KFC! He didn’t work there but she did get to work with him at Pine Meadow after leaving KFC. Yup, they’ve known each other for ages seen as how she’s about to hit the big 40 soon!

Some where in this journey she managed to go back to a KFC and met some guy who hauled a “mean load of cabbage” for the slaw…William and Robin have been married for 13 years! They moved to his hometown of Louisville and Robin worked in food service at the University of Louisville for a short time. She realized that the “ville” just wasn’t “Big Blue Country” and they moved back to Lexington.

“Bo’Ski” figured that she had been through enough with the restaurant industry but then a new and exciting place came to town, Kenny Rogers Roasters…you remember them don’t ya? She spent the next eight years putting many hours into watching, listening, learning and working her butt off only to see the franchise close in 1999. OMG, she’s 30, unemployed and beginning to feel the “old age” complex! EEK!!!

So, what’s a girl to do? In Robin’s case that meant a severe case of the hives and while scratching away she managed to get a business loan, find a partner and open her own restaurant! Welcome to Menu On Main or as most came to know it…MOM’s! Chances are you all recognize her from the many days and hours spent serving some of the best lunches in downtown Lexington. It was a great career move but alas, the landlord wanted the building for his own use and she was forced to close. A sad day for Lexington and for Robin. :( But the story doesn’t stop here…nope, ya can’t keep the “Bo’Ski” down!

After a year as the contracted owner of the restaurant in the Lone Oak County Club in Nicholasville…another “ville” place! She decided that this just wasn’t what she wanted out of life and so the period of “what the hell am I gonna be when I grow up” started! Lol She took a “job” and it just wasn’t right. To help pay the bills she became the “shrimp monger” for Drew and Karin at Herb’n Renewal…yup, the same Drew that she has known for years…at their booth at the Lexington Farmers’ Market each Saturday. One afternoon she noticed a “for rent” sign in the window of a place called CAROS! The rest is history!!! :)

Just so you know, she is still happily married to the “cabbage guy” William and they share their home in Lexington with 5 four-legged hunks of love! Restaurants are in her blood and providing the very best with a smile to go along with it is what makes her day!caros-robin-breakfast

Most of you only get to see her back but she does wear a mean hat too!caros-robin-hat-queenAnd, yes…sometimes a garbage bag! lol  This was practice for a Halloween costume but she does look pretty good in it!caros-halloween-robin-bagThe good thing is she can also handle a paint brush…A little update to CAROS was in order!  As you can see, she loves what she does no matter how goofy she looks!  We love her and CAROS wouldn’t be CAROS without her!caros-robin1Robin “Bo’Ski” is just one more reason why CAROS is the Best Little Joint Downtown!!!

Meet The CAROS “Crew!”

November 11, 2008 · Leave a Comment

We’re starting off with the very first person that you see when you come into CAROS…Shawnee aka “Stella!”

Shawnee is a Versailles, KY gal who graduated from Woodford County High School. She has a son and a daughter, both 9 years old. That’s right…she has twins! So, her home life sure helps her deal with the public!!!

So, how did “Stella” end up at CAROS? Well, she has always loved cooking and often helped her grandmother in the kitchen. She’s even been the “chitterling” cleaner in preparation for the family Thanksgiving meal. So, she’s really had hands on training. Her restaurant background is mostly in the fast food industry but that’s what it is all about…feeding crowds, good food fast! Some of you might recognize her from her time behind the counter at the Rite Aid on Main St. She’d spend her lunch hour at CAROS and when the demolition started she had to find a new way to support those twins.

CAROS loves friendly folks so Shawnee was perfect for greeting our customers and she’s fast learning how to man the grill! Besides, she makes the very best iced tea around. You’ll know it as “Stella’s Sweet Tea” and she’ll darn sure remind you that she makes it! lolcaros-shawnee-family

TGIF at CAROS!

November 7, 2008 · Leave a Comment

The “crew” has finally found the time to write down their “what I did before CAROS” bios! Yippee!!! This might seem like a really strange thing for most folks but you have to remember that CAROS is not just “the best little joint downtown,” it’s also a place where people gather, get to know each other and just feel at home while enjoying some really great food! There’s always conversation going on while friends and strangers alike enjoy things like a 4 egg omelet…that’s a big one! Or hand pattied burgers smothered in things like beer cheese, mushrooms or peppers. And, don’t forget the homemade chicken salad, cole slaw and for dessert there is always a homemade cookie or two! Did I mention that CAROS has great food!!!  So, look for the first installment of the “crew” biography on Monday.

Don’t forget that Saturday brings Mrs. Drew to CAROS with all of the Herb’n Renewal goodies! We’ll have a limited menu from 7 until 1 but you’ll be able to purchase some of the same great seasoning that we use at CAROS. The great part is they even share recipes, tips and hints. Plus you can purchase the very best homemade soap around! Mrs. Drew does that in her spare (yeah right) time! lol
